J Johnstone Engineering recently completed the removal and replacement of a galvanised steel fire escape staircase with landing platform at a property in Harrington near Workington, Cumbria.
The project involved removing an old condemned staircase and installing a newly fabricated external fire escape staircase, designed to provide safe access and emergency egress from the building.
Due to the layout of the property, the installation presented several logistical challenges which required careful planning and fabrication.
Removal of Existing Fire Escape Staircase
The original staircase had reached the end of its service life and had been condemned, requiring full removal before the replacement staircase could be installed.
Access to the rear of the property was extremely limited. The only route to the work area was through a narrow hallway within the communal area of the building, up an internal staircase and then out to the rear of the property.
Because of this restricted access, the existing staircase had to be cut into small manageable sections so each piece could be safely carried through the building and removed from site.
Careful removal was required to ensure the structure could be dismantled and transported without causing disruption within the building.
Fabrication of Modular Steel Staircase
To allow the new staircase to be transported through the same restricted access route, the replacement fire escape was fabricated in modular bolt-together sections.
The staircase design included a landing platform where the stair direction changes, allowing the structure to turn and fit the available space at the rear of the property.
All components were fabricated in-house at our workshop in Silloth, Cumbria, ensuring each section was produced accurately while remaining small enough to be carried through the building during installation.
Producing the staircase in smaller sections allowed our team to move each component through the narrow access areas before assembling the full structure on site.
Galvanised Fire Escape Installation
Once fabrication was complete, the new staircase sections were delivered to site and carefully transported through the building to the installation area.
The staircase was then assembled by our on-site fitting team, with the landing platform allowing the staircase to change direction before continuing to the upper level.
The completed staircase was supplied with a galvanised finish, providing long-term corrosion protection and making it suitable for external use.
