Structural Steel Double A-Frame and Beam Installation Near Thursby, Carlisle

J Johnstone Engineering recently fabricated and installed a package of structural steelwork for a new build property located near Thursby, close to Carlisle in Cumbria.

The steel framework formed a key part of the building’s structure and included double A-frames, a ridge beam, perimeter structural beams and supporting steel posts.

Situated in a rural setting with open views across surrounding farmland and towards the distant mountains, the property was designed to incorporate large open spaces while maintaining strong structural support.

Double A-Frame Roof Structure

A central feature of the project was the installation of two steel A-frames forming part of the roof structure.

The A-frames were seated on the wall tops of the masonry structure, bearing across both the inner and outer leaf of the blockwork.

A ridge beam runs across the apex of the A-frames, continuing beyond the frame to support the roof structure over the balcony area.

This arrangement allowed the main roof structure and the balcony roof to be incorporated into the same steel framework while safely transferring loads through the A-frames and supporting walls below.

Structural Steel Beams Forming the Framework

In addition to the A-frames, several structural steel beams were installed throughout the building, forming the main structural framework.

These beams allow the property to incorporate larger open spaces internally while still providing the strength required to support the floors and roof structure.

Steel beams are commonly used in new build construction where larger spans and flexible room layouts are required.

Steel Posts Supporting Larger Spans

To support the longer beam spans within the property, three steel column posts were installed.

These posts were bolted to a larger ground floor beam, allowing loads from the structural steel above to be safely transferred into the foundations.

This type of arrangement is commonly used where open-plan layouts are required while maintaining structural stability.

Fabricated In-House at Our Silloth Workshop

All structural steel components for the project were fabricated in-house at our family-run workshop in Silloth, Cumbria.

Producing the steelwork internally allows our team to ensure every beam, frame and connection is manufactured accurately before delivery to site.

Fabricating in-house also allows us to maintain strict quality control across all structural steelwork projects.

Installation Near Thursby, Carlisle

Once fabrication was complete, the steelwork was delivered to the site near Thursby, where it was installed by our experienced on-site fitting team.

Careful positioning and alignment of the steel ensured the framework integrated correctly with the building structure and surrounding masonry work.

As part of the same project, our team also designed and installed a bespoke balcony railing, allowing the finished property to make the most of the surrounding countryside views.
