J Johnstone Engineering recently fabricated and installed structural steel framework designed to support a sandstone bay window for a new build property on a housing development near Cockermouth, Cumbria.
The steel frame was required to carry the weight of the external sandstone bay while allowing the architectural design of the property to incorporate the traditional stone finish.
The project involved fabricating a bespoke steel frame that would provide the necessary structural support while integrating neatly within the building structure.
Structural Steel Support for Stone Bay Window
Stone bay windows can add character and architectural detail to a property, but they also require reliable structural support due to the weight of the masonry.
For this project we fabricated a steel support frame using box section steel, designed specifically to carry the sandstone structure.
The steel beam included an extended flange, allowing the stonework to sit securely on the steel frame while maintaining the appearance of the traditional stone bay window.
Fabricated to UKCA Execution Class 2
All steel components were fabricated in-house at our workshop in Silloth, Cumbria.
The steelwork was manufactured in accordance with the structural engineer’s drawings and produced to UKCA Execution Class 2 standards, ensuring compliance with structural steel fabrication requirements.
Producing the steelwork internally allows our team to maintain strict quality control while ensuring each component is manufactured accurately before delivery to site.
Installation Near Cockermouth
Once fabrication was complete, the steel frame was delivered to the new build site near Cockermouth where it was installed by our experienced on-site fitting team.
Accurate installation was essential to ensure the steel frame aligned correctly with the surrounding masonry work and provided the required support for the sandstone bay window.
