A recent project for J Johnstone Engineering involved the fabrication and installation of structural steelwork for a property located in the Borrowdale Valley in the Lake District, one of the most scenic areas of Cumbria.
Working alongside an award-winning regular client, our team produced and installed a bespoke structural steel framework designed to support new architectural features within the property while maintaining the integrity of the existing structure.
Projects like this build on similar work we have recently completed across the region, including a major structural renovation project in Keswick and an extension incorporating a double A-frame portal frame in Braithwaite.
Offset A-Frame Structure
The main structural feature for this project was an offset A-frame fabricated from box section steel, designed to form part of the new roof structure.
The frame was connected by a structural ridge beam, providing strength and stability across the span of the building while allowing the architectural layout of the property to remain open and visually striking.
Offset A-frame designs can be particularly useful in renovation or architectural projects where roof structures do not follow a standard symmetrical form.
Structural Support for Existing Walls
As part of the same project, we also fabricated two goal post frames designed to support sections of the existing wall structure.
Goal post frames are commonly used when structural alterations require load-bearing walls to be supported while new openings or layouts are introduced. Fabricating these frames to precise specifications ensures the loads from the building are safely transferred through the steel framework.
All steel components for this stage of the project were manufactured in accordance with the structural engineer’s drawings.
Fabricated In-House at Our Cumbria Workshop
All steelwork for the project was fabricated in-house at our Silloth workshop in Cumbria.
The components were cut, assembled and prepared in the workshop before being transported to site for installation. Manufacturing steelwork internally allows us to maintain strict quality control and ensure every piece is produced accurately to match the engineer’s specifications.
Installation in Borrowdale Valley
Once fabrication was complete, the steelwork was delivered to the site in Borrowdale Valley, where our installation team carefully fitted the structural framework in coordination with the other trades working on the project.
Projects in the Lake District often present logistical challenges due to access and terrain, making careful planning and experienced installation essential.
