J Johnstone Engineering recently fabricated and installed a comprehensive package of structural steelwork for a large new build property located in Lanercost near Brampton, Cumbria.
Working alongside a regular construction client, the project required a significant amount of structural steel to support the architectural design of the property, including traditional stone masonry elements, large openings and cantilevered sections.
The steel framework formed a key part of the building structure, allowing the property to incorporate wide internal spaces while supporting the weight of the external stonework through engineered steel components.
Structural Steel Framework for New Build Construction
The steelwork package for this project included a wide range of structural elements designed to support different parts of the building.
The installation consisted of:
• Multiple goal post frames with extended flanges designed to carry stone masonry
• 18 structural beams with extended flanges supporting stonework throughout the property
• 8 wind posts providing structural stability across the building
• 6 purlin beams drilled to accept wall plates
• Additional single beams and column posts positioned throughout the structure
Extended flange beams were used to provide sufficient bearing for the stonework while maintaining the architectural layout of the building.
Cantilever Structure Supporting Balcony and First Floor
One of the key structural features within the project was a cantilever section designed to support the first floor and balcony area.
To achieve this, a series of beams and column posts were fabricated with connections designed specifically to carry the cantilever loads and transfer them safely through the structural steel framework.
Cantilever structures require careful design and accurate installation to ensure loads are correctly distributed through the building.
Fabricated In-House to EN1090 Execution Class 2
All steel components for the project were fabricated in-house at our family-run workshop in Silloth, Cumbria.
The steelwork was manufactured in accordance with the structural engineer’s drawings and fabricated to EN1090 Execution Class 2 standards, ensuring compliance with structural steel fabrication requirements.
Producing the steelwork internally allows our team to maintain strict quality control while ensuring every beam, frame and column is produced accurately before delivery to site.
Installation in Lanercost Near Brampton
Once fabrication was complete, the structural steelwork was delivered to the site in Lanercost near Brampton, where our experienced on-site fitting team installed the full steel framework.
The installation included a number of bolted structural connections, allowing the different steel elements to be assembled accurately on site and integrated with the wider building structure.
Large structural projects such as this require careful coordination with the builder and other trades to ensure the installation progresses smoothly.
