Structural Double Steel A-Frame for Large Self Build in Seaton, West Cumbria

Following on from other projects within the same development in Seaton, West Cumbria, we were appointed to fabricate and install the structural steelwork for another substantial self-build property.

This build was a large residential home requiring a carefully designed steel framework to create open internal spaces while supporting the roof structure efficiently.

Steel A-Frames with Ridge Beams Design

Unlike a full portal frame system, this project used steel A-frames seated onto wall tops, combined with a central ridge beam to carry roof loads across the span of the property.

This structural approach allowed for:

  • Wide, open-plan internal layouts
  • Reduced need for internal load-bearing walls
  • Strong roof support across a large footprint
  • Clean, modern roof geometry

Positioning the A-frames on the wall tops required precise fabrication and installation to ensure correct load transfer down into the supporting structure.

Fabricated In-House at Our Silloth Workshop

All steelwork for this Seaton self-build was fabricated in-house at J Johnstone Engineering.

Our team produced:

  • Structural A-frame sections
  • Ridge beam system
  • Associated connection plates and bolt assemblies

Manufacturing in our Cumbria workshop ensures full quality control and consistency before steel ever reaches site.

For larger homes like this, accuracy in fabrication is essential — particularly when working with roof geometry and long spans.

Installation on Site in Seaton

Once delivered to site, our team installed the steel framework in accordance with the structural engineer’s drawings.

The process involved:

  • Accurate positioning of wall-top A-frames
  • Installation of the ridge beam
  • Bolted connections for structural integrity
  • Close coordination with other trades on site

Large residential self-builds demand careful sequencing to keep projects moving efficiently — something we’re well accustomed to across West Cumbria.

Supporting Self Builds Across West Cumbria

Seaton continues to see high-quality self-build developments, and structural steel plays a key role in enabling modern layouts and architectural flexibility.

From A-frame systems and ridge beams to multi-beam floor support structures, we provide structural steel fabrication and installation across:

  • Seaton
  • Workington
  • Whitehaven
  • Cockermouth
  • Carlisle
  • The wider West Cumbria and Lake District region

With nearly four decades of experience, J Johnstone Engineering supports homeowners, builders and developers with reliable, in-house fabricated steelwork tailored to each project.
