J Johnstone Engineering recently fabricated and installed a bespoke curved wrought iron handrail for garden steps at a property in Thornthwaite, in the Lake District.
The handrail was designed to follow a curved set of steps leading up to a patio seating area, providing both practical support and a clean architectural feature within the garden.
Positioned in a quiet area overlooking the garden, the finished railing complements the surrounding landscaping while providing safe and comfortable access between levels.
Curved Handrail Design
The handrail was designed to follow the natural curve of the steps, creating a smooth and continuous line leading up to the patio area.
Fabricating curved handrails requires careful measurement and shaping to ensure the finished piece fits the steps precisely while maintaining a clean and balanced appearance.
The final design provides both structural support and a subtle decorative feature, helping the steps blend naturally into the surrounding garden space.
Bespoke Fabrication
The handrail was measured on site before being fabricated in our workshop, ensuring the finished structure matched the layout of the steps and patio area.
The curved handrail was constructed using a combination of:
• Half round convex bar
• 30mm box section
• 30 x 10 flat bar
All components were carefully drilled and assembled to create a seamless and well-finished result, giving the railing a clean and professional appearance.
Galvanised and Powder Coated Finish
Once fabricated, the handrail was hot dip galvanised before receiving a matt black powder coated finish.
This process provides long-term protection against weathering while maintaining the classic appearance associated with wrought iron railings.
The matt black finish works particularly well in garden settings, complementing stonework, paving and surrounding planting.
Fabricated and Installed by Our Team
After fabrication and finishing, the curved handrail was delivered to the property in Thornthwaite and installed by our team.
Careful installation ensured the handrail followed the curve of the steps precisely, providing a comfortable and secure grip along the full length.
Accurate installation is especially important with curved railings to ensure both safety and visual alignment.
